Overview
In 1924, while serving as director of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius (1883–1969) built his first private house in the architectural style he was developing at the school: the Auerbach House. Built for Felix Auerbach, a physics professor in Jena, a university town near Weimar, the house was an early instantiation of the nascent Bauhaus Style and an important milestone for the early years of the school. Working with his partner Adolf Meyer, Gropius used the Auerbach House to test out the functionality of his architectural theories as applied to a family home. It is still used as a private residence today. Extensively illustrated with photographs of the building and its interiors (restored to highlight Alfred Arndt’s original color scheme, boasting 37 distinct pastel tones), this publication tells the story of this important Bauhaus building, its fascinating original inhabitants and its extraordinary restoration.
